Notes - Walter was baptized and confirmed in the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Poth. He became a member of the First Lutheran Church of Floresville when he married his wife Edna. He worked as a carpenter for 25 years, and was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America for 50 years.
He enjoyed his job and was never without a story to tell; however, there were a few local construction projects that made his chest swell with pride when he spoke of them: being on the construction crew that helped build the Institute of Texan Cultures and the Tower of the Americas for HemisFair in 1968.
He held many interests, including hunting and fishing. In 1947, he came close to death while fishing in Copano Bay at Rockport with his father-in-law, Charley Boening, and cousin Otto Pundt. The small fishing boat they were riding in capsized. After struggling with the rough sea water, their prayers were answered when a 16-year-old Houston boy rescued them.
Walter took great pride in his garden, tending the small herd of cattle near his home at Camp Ranch, and the upkeep of his vehicles. He valued religion, work ethic, and his family. [1]
