At the age of 57 he had an acute attack of pneumonia, which left him very weak, and was ordered by a physician to spend some time in New Mexico. Some years later he was stricken with diabetes and stayed on a strict diet, using insulin, for nine years. In 1933 he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. He was very quiet and reserved, dearly loved and respected by his wife, children, relatives, and friends.

In San Antonio he was known as one of the finest citizens and was highly honored and esteemed by all fellow citizens. Paul died of diabetes at the age of seventy-seven.

Bertha was quiet and gentle, had a fine voice, and was very fond of music. She crocheted beautifully, and much of her work will no doubt be cherished for generations to come. She was interested in flowers, did much of her own gardening, and also enjoyed traveling. In 1946, when 84 years old, she took her first plane trip, flying from San Antonio to El Paso. She was delighted and enjoyed the trip immensely. In 1947, aged eighty-five, Bertha was still very active, attended church every Sunday, and was still very interested in all news of the day and every modern convenience. She died on October 12, 1948 in San Antonio.
