William was captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on 1 Jul 1863. Initially sent to Ft. McHenry, Baltimore, he was later transferred to Ft. Delaware and then to Pt. Lookout, Maryland. William took the oath of allegiance and enlisted in Co. C, 1st United States Volunteer Infantry ("Galvanized Yankees"), 19 Feb 1864. He died on Christmas Eve, 1864, of chronic diarrhea. Initially interred at Fort Rice where he had died, his remains were removed and reburied in the Custer National Cemetery on 6 Mar 1905.
