    Roger attended a country grade school through the eighth grade and graduated from Maryville High School in Michigan. He served in World War II in the South Pacific. While he was at Fort Bliss, Texas he met Mildred. After the war, he attended Michigan State College graduating in 1950 with a Master’s in forestry. He and Mildred were married after he graduated. His work assignments took them to Carlsbad Caverns, Big Bend National Park, Colonial National Historical Park, Andrew Johnson National Historical Park and finally to the Great Smoky Mountains Park. He retired in 1986.

    Mildred attended both private and public schools in Laredo. She received a BA degree in Library Science from Texas State College for Women in 1941. After graduating, she was a librarian for the Texas High School in El Paso, Texas. After her marriage to Roger, they moved to Michigan where Roger studied at Michigan State College, and she worked in the library. She later as librarian at the College of William and Mary and Tusculum College. At the final move to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Mildred was responsible for the establisment of mental retardation facilties, which included a school and a workshop. A group home for the mentally retarded was built and named “The Mildred Miller Group Home.” Mildred passed away from cancer.

    Vernon Jack Shiner attended the public schools in San Antonio, and is a graduate of Texas A. & M. College. He served as an officer in World War I. After the war he farmed for two years in Laredo, Texas.

    He and Mildred have two children, a boy and a girl. He worked for the U. S. Department of Agriculture from June 1921 to December 1956 when he retired. Druing that time the family lived in Laredo, Presidio, Brownsville and El Paso, Texas.

    He is Past Master of Laredo Lodge No. 547 A. F. & A. M. His hobbies are reading, growing flowers and gathering rocks. His hothouse is his pride and joy. He is a member of the Episcopal Church and he and his wife are living in El Paso, Texas.

    Mildred attended the public schools in San Antonio and graduated from the old Main Avenue High School. As a girl she was active in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

    Jack Shiner whom she married was employed by the U. S. Department of Agriculture; so the moved from time to time.

    To this union two children were born. Her home life has been very happy and a busy one; still she finds time to spend in her garden and sew for herself and grandchildren. She has also been Past Matron of the Laredo Chapter No. 86, Order of the Eastern Star. She is also a member of the Episcopal Church and now resides in El Paso, Texas.
