Homer attended school in Port Lavaca, Texas, where he developed an aptitude for math. His parents were talented musicians, but he was orpaned at 15 and was separated from his siblings. Moving from relative to relative, it was his faith in God and his Masonic friends who were sources of strength. During the Great Depression he road the rails looking for work. He was hired as a bookkeeper and timekeeper with the WPA in La Grange.
Homer was active at the First Baptist Church in La Grange where he served as treasurer. He was a Bible scholar who also had beautiful handwriting, and as a result he was often asked to pen awards given by the church. He was a Free Mason through which he served others. He was employed as a public accountant for the Fayette County Auditor for more than 30 years.
Homer’s first marriage was to Nellie May Hill.
