He did participate in the Battle of San Jacinto because he was among those soldiers furloughed to move families across the Brazos River. He served as Captain in Peter Perkins' 7th Battalion of Mississippi Territory (Madison County) Militia. He volunteered for service at Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama. James entered the volunteer Army of Texas on 1 Oct 1835 and was honorably discharged on 13 Dec 1835. He served under his son, General Edward Burleson, in the Grass Fight (a part of the Siege of Bexar) on 26 November 1835.

    Notes:

    James Burleson received a land grant after his move to Texas. The land was located on the east bank of the Colorado River below present-day Bastrop.
