    Notes:

The following notes were taken by Dr. Rufus C. Burleson regarding an interview he had with John R. Burleson.

John was born near Moulton, Alabama on 30 Jan 1819. The family moved to Tennessee in 1823, Arkansas in 1832, and Mississippi in 1835. They came to Texas on the Red Land Nacogdoches Company in the fall of 1837.

He went to Colorado (County?) and joined Capt. John Lynch’s Company with Capt. John Lee Moore commanding. On 14 Feb 1839 they fought under Capt. Smithwick against Comanches for much of the day. An Indian chief [near where San Saba now stands] and over 100 men. Seven Texans were wounded and none killed.

The next battle was in 1840 near Seguin against a band of Indians led by Codamay, the Mexican. Commander Gen. Edward Burleson, who was literally surrounded by a blaze of fire, killed 30 Indians. He also shot a free negro for being in with the Indians.

The third battle was on the San Gabriel against Flores. The Texans chased him from Onion Creek to San Gabriel there killing him and two of his men. Next was on 12 Aug 1840 at Plum Creek with General Burleson commanding against the 400 Indians who burned Linnville and sacked all of the country.

The battle on Atascosa occurred in the Spring of 1852. About a month later, they raided some
Lipans and rescued two Mexican women.

In 1858 on the Nueces was a fight with the Comanches. John commanded scouts of seven men against fourteen Indians. They followed the Indians, killing two of them and capturing their horses while only two of the men were wounded.

In 1859 going over to Mexico for a negro, John and a Mexican fought 30 Indians eighteen miles from Eagle Pass. They got forces from the Leon and ran them across the Rio Grande. The same Indians made a raid on the other side of the Rio Grande, crossed over on the Texas side below Laredo and stole over 200 horses from the Nueces. John rallied fourteen men and chased them eighteen days, but they never catched the group.

In 1861, 70 Comanches came to where John lived near Carrizo and killed six men. John raised eighteen men and began puruit of the Indians. John’s group fell in with another company. They attacked the Indians and ran them out of the country after they had killed 22 Texans.

John married Mary Fulton who was born in Louisiana and raised in Grimes County, Texas.
