He spent some time in the Quartermaster's department in Grenada, Mississippi. He served mostly in General Roddy's command in the Tennessee Valley. Dabney Burleson was a private in Roddy's cavalry, under Nathan Bedford Forrest. He was at the Selma arsenal when the war ended, escaping capture.
