  After graduating high school, E. V. worked on his father’s ranch and later on the ranch of Bob Murphy. After marrying Elizabeth Tumlinson, they lived in Texas and Colorado. In 1947 they moved back to Elida, New Mexico, as E. V. had bought the Elida Oil Company. He retired in 1975 and moved to Portales. E. V. was a member of Elida Baptist Church, and after his move to Portales, a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was active in church, the Elida Lions Club, the 42 Club, and the Elida Volunteer Fire Department. [2]
